Sei es Golf, Segeln oder einfach nur das tŠgliche Bodytraining bei Muscle Mike um die Ecke. Profitieren davon tut aber nur der jeweils Hobbytreibende. Nicht so bei CAREY ZIEGLER'S EXPENSIVE HOBBY. Was er und seine Band Woche fŸr Woche im Hobbyraum treiben, dient nicht nur ihrer musikalischen Leidenschaft, sondern ist auch fŸr die Musikfans von gro§em Interesse. Drei Jahre brauchten sie um ihr neuestes Hobby-Projekt namens "The Adventures of Elliot FinŽsse" auf die Gehšrgange der Musikfans loszulassen. Das Cover erinnert ein wenig an CHEVY CHASE und seinen Film "The Memoirs Of An Invisible Man". Mit Filmmusik hat das Ganze aber nun Ÿberhaupt nichts zu tun. Freunde gut trainierter Ohren werden beim Lauschen der zehn Tracks so manches Mal in VerzŸcken geraten. Hier sind sieben Musikprofis mit Herz & Kšnnen bei der Sache. Gleich nach dem instrumentalen AufwŠrmschmankerl The Ride zeigt die Band auf Two below New York ihr ganzes Kšnnen. Ein fett groovender Soulrocker mit Jazztouch. Carey Ziegler's markante Stimme und die tollen BlŠsersŠtze machen Appetit auf mehr. Seine professionelle STEELY DAN-AtmosphŠre kann dieser Song zu keiner Zeit verleugnen. Die Chorpassagen sind einfach Klasse. Beim folgenden Something Is Wrong klingt die Orgel-Eršffnung wie ein neuer Song von NICE. Doch der Eindruck wird nach 10 Sekunden von den knackigen BlŠsern fšrmlich weggeblasen. Something Is Wrong ist zumindest musikalisch mehr unter All Is Right einzuordnen. Trotz aller komplexen Breaks und schwierigster Arrangements bleibt der Song immer leichtfŸ§ig und beschwingt. Das alles klingt wie ein Mix aus STEELY DAN und CITY BOY. Von ganze anderer Machart ist anschlie§end Nation Of Strangers. Ein wahrhaft konzertant dargebotenes Folkrock Schmankerl mit bestechenden akustischen Gitarren und gediegenem E-Gitarren Solo. Bei diesem Song dŸrften YES Freunde aufhorchen. Doch Sky King fegt den letzten Folkrock Akkord sofort aus den Boxen. Ein weiteres instrumentales Kunstwerk. Selten habe ich in letzter Zeit ein derma§en dynamisches BlŠser-Arrangement gehšrt. Die Horn Section blŠst wie ein Hurrikan. Gewissen Passagen erinnern mich an die kongenialen Brass-Rocker von Bill Chase. Ein Highlight auf einer an Hšhepunkten wahrlich nicht armen CD. Die Gitarrenphrasen sprechen ebenfalls fŸr sich. Susie schaltet einige Minuten spŠter einen Gang zurŸck. STEELY DAN meets THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION. Der Grundrhythmus hat fast schon einen leichten Reggae-Touch. Mann, macht das Lied Spa§! Gesanglich wird wieder was Feines geboten. Das alles wird mit einem gekonnt vertracktem Schlagzeug gewŸrzt. Don'tRun Away lŠ§t es danach wieder schšn folkrockig ertšnen. In bester Jackson Brown- und James Raylor-Manier erfreut das schšne Liebeslied die Ohren. Obwohl Mr. Trips mit dem Satz beginnt: "A Deadhead lives on the second floor", ist dieser Song sicherlich nicht der gro§en Deadhead Gemeinde gewidmet. Es geht thematisch um die Vietnam Aufarbeitung. Das alles recht dramatisch und trotzdem wieder locker aus dem Handgelenk gespielt. Wer immer schon wissen wollte wie eine Session zwischen den MOTHERS OF INVENTION und 10 CC klingt, sollte seine Ohren bei Raccoon Theory spitzen. Das ist hochintelligente und teilweise sehr komplexe Popmusik, die von der Band mit unglaublich viel Humor prŠsentiert wird. Zum Abschlu§ gibt es noch eine Liveversion von Y2K2. Die Studioversion war auf ihrem VorgŠngeralbum "Short Stories" (siehe Review) erstmalig erschienen. Der Song ist ein HŠrtetest fŸr jeden Musiker. Was hier in 4 Minuten an Breaks und verrŸckten Gesangseinlagen geboten wird, reicht bei STATUS QUO fŸr 10 Alben (soll jetzt keine Abwertung der Band sein). Und das bringt die Band live mit einer PrŠzision und Lockerheit rŸber, dass einem die Ohren trŠnen. "The Adventures of Elliot FinŽsse" ist musikalisch noch eine Steigerung ihrer ersten CD "Short Stories". Alle 10 Tracks bersten vor MusikalitŠt und witzigen EinfŠllen. Dazu verfŸgen die sieben Bandmitglieder Ÿber ein hohes instrumentales Kšnnen. Das Zusammen ergibt einen tollen und stimmigen Mix aus Rock, Soul, Jazz, Folk und Pop. CAREY'S ZIEGLERS EXPENSIVE HOBBY oder besser gesagt THE EXPENSIVE HOBBY OF THE MAGNIFICANT SEVEN. Der Klang dieser, im HDCD Verfahren aufgenommenen, CD ist ebenfalls erstklassig.
